Intro

I’m a lawyer currently living and working in New York. I work on a range of corporate matters (predominantly M&A) and on financial regulatory matters (SEC/CFTC). My opinions are solely my own and are not reflective of any employer.

I love the practice of law and complex financial transactions. Before I was a lawyer, I studied philosophy and economics at the University of Puget Sound (go Loggers!) and got my JD/MBA at Cornell. I think that the problems which frequently present in financial regulation and law generally (coordination systems and incentive structures, resolving ambiguity in natural language, compression and derivation) are also AI issues. I’m not very interested in “Legal AI” as a meaningful subfield, but I think legal work is a productive testbed for general reasoning.

The purpose of this website is to provide a durable and semi-public place for notes and more developed pieces of writing. I’m also active on X/twitter @bensovocool. You can find me on LinkedIn or Substack, but I don’t post there.
